Dibrugarh: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Thursday that the state is preparing to upgrade its national highways to facilitate fighter jet landings, marking a major infrastructure push. Alongside this development, the state government has also approved 24/7 business operations in Guwahati, Dibrugarh, and Silchar to boost economic activity.
Speaking after a Cabinet meeting in Dibrugarh, CM Sarma revealed plans to upgrade the national highway between Dibrugarh and Jorhat to international standards, enabling Indian Air Force (IAF) fighter jets to land on the highway later this year. “Assam will witness several transformative developments this year,” Sarma said, underscoring the government’s focus on infrastructure growth.
In a swipe at critics, Sarma remarked, “Some people criticize us when we talk about development, but projects like underwater tunnels and world-class highways will soon become a reality.”
24/7 Business Operations in Key Cities
The Assam Cabinet also approved a major shift in business regulations, allowing shops in Guwahati, Dibrugarh, and Silchar to remain open 24 hours a day. In other urban areas, businesses can now operate until 2 a.m., while rural areas have been permitted to function until 11 p.m.
“Guwahati, Dibrugarh, and Silchar are municipal corporations, and the Cabinet has approved continuous business operations in these cities. Previously, a weekly closing day was mandated, but that restriction has been lifted,” Sarma said.
Worker Welfare Measures
The Chief Minister assured that employee welfare remains a priority. No business establishment can force workers to exceed nine hours of work per day or 48 hours per week. Additionally, businesses operating round-the-clock must hire at least three employees to ensure shifts do not exceed eight or nine hours.
Sarma expressed optimism that these initiatives would create job opportunities and promote economic growth, especially during festive periods like Bihu and Puja. “These measures aim to make Assam’s economy more vibrant and employment-friendly,” he added.
The dual focus on infrastructure and economic growth reflects Assam’s ambition to position itself as a key player in India’s development landscape.
