Jalgaon, 23rd Jan. The death toll in the tragic Jalgaon train accident has climbed to 13 following the discovery of a headless body along the railway tracks, police confirmed on Thursday.
The incident occurred on Wednesday evening when passengers of the Mumbai-bound Pushpak Express, alarmed by a chain-pulling incident, disembarked and were struck by the oncoming Karnataka Express on adjacent tracks near Pachora town.
“Of the 13 victims, eight have been identified, including four Nepali nationals,” said Special Inspector General of Police Dattatraya Karale. Among the 15 injured, 10 remain hospitalized, with nine receiving care at Pachora Civil Hospital and one in Jalgaon. Others with minor injuries were discharged.
Central Railway officials, including the general manager, visited the accident site and hospitals to assess the situation. The Pushpak Express resumed its journey, reaching Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus at 1:20 am on Thursday.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, speaking from Davos, stated, “Passengers mistakenly believed there was smoke in the train and jumped onto adjacent tracks, leading to this unfortunate accident.” He announced ₹5 lakh compensation for the deceased’s families, while the Railway Board declared additional aid: ₹1.5 lakh for the deceased, ₹50,000 for grievous injuries, and ₹5,000 for minor injuries.
