Varanasi, 20th Oct. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the RJ Sankara Eye Hospital on Sunday, asserting that the region’s identity is shifting from solely a center of religion and spirituality to a significant hub for healthcare. Speaking at the ceremony in his Lok Sabha constituency, Modi criticized previous governments for neglecting eastern Uttar Pradesh.
Reciting the Sanskrit couplet “Tamaso ma jyotirgamay” (lead me from darkness to light), the Prime Minister expressed his joy in returning to Varanasi, emphasizing the hospital’s dual role as a blend of spirituality and modernity. “For a long time, Kashi has been known for its spiritual heritage, but now it will also emerge as a major center for healthcare with advanced treatment facilities available,” he stated.
Highlighting the government’s achievements, Modi noted that in the last decade, 25 crore people have lifted themselves out of poverty, leading the administration to prioritize public health. He remarked, “This hospital will cater to both the elderly and children, reinforcing our commitment to ensuring a healthy population.”
The RJ Sankara Eye Hospital is the 14th facility operated by the Kanchi Math in India. Before the inauguration, Modi met with the Shankaracharya of Kanchi and paid respects at the statue of the former Shankaracharya.
The new hospital is expected to benefit residents from 20 districts in eastern Uttar Pradesh, as well as areas in bordering states like Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh, according to representatives from the Kanchi Math.
During his day-long visit, Modi is set to launch several development projects, including multiple airport initiatives valued at over ₹6,700 crore. This marks his first trip to Varanasi since June 18. As part of the agenda, he will also lay the foundation stone for the expansion of the Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport’s runway, the construction of a new terminal, and other associated works, with an estimated cost of around ₹2,870 crore.
