New Delhi, 6th Jan. AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal on Monday raised concerns over the detection of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases in Karnataka, urging the Centre to act swiftly to prevent a potential health crisis.
Kejriwal highlighted the importance of early containment measures, citing lessons from the Covid-19 pandemic. “The outbreak of the HMPV virus calls for immediate attention. We must be prepared to tackle what could become another health emergency,” he said in a post on X.
The Union Health Ministry confirmed two HMPV cases identified through Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) surveillance. A three-month-old female and an eight-month-old male infant, both with bronchopneumonia, were diagnosed at Baptist Hospital in Bengaluru. The infants have been discharged or are recovering, with no history of international travel.
The ministry emphasized that HMPV is a globally circulating virus and has not caused any unusual surge in Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) or Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI) cases in India. Surveillance systems remain robust, with the ICMR continuing to track HMPV trends.
In Delhi, the health department issued an advisory for hospitals to prepare for respiratory illnesses. Director General of Health Services Vandana Bagga emphasized strict isolation protocols, timely reporting, and medicine availability in a recent meeting with health officials.
