Thrissur, 21st Oct. The Left government in Kerala has voiced strong objections to a recent gazette notification issued by the Central government, which sets new conditions for conducting fireworks displays. The state contends that these stipulations could hinder the smooth conduct of the renowned Thrissur Pooram festival.
In a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Kerala’s State Revenue Minister K Rajan expressed “utter disappointment” with the notification issued by the Union Ministry of Commerce and Industry on October 11. Rajan emphasized that fireworks are an “integral part” of the Thrissur Pooram celebrations and sought the prime minister’s intervention to amend the rules to preserve the festival’s traditions.
One of the key concerns highlighted in the letter is Condition No. 2, which mandates that licensed magazines be located at least 200 meters away from the display site. Rajan argued that this condition is “unnecessary and illogical,” pointing out that the distance under the Explosive Rules of 2008 was 45 meters. He stressed that adhering to the new rule would make it impractical to organize the fireworks displays, a central attraction of the festival.
Rajan also criticized Condition No. 6, which requires the assembly shed to be at least 100 meters away from the display site. He noted that since the assembly shed would be empty during the fireworks display, the requirement lacks justification.
Additionally, the letter raised concerns about Condition No. 4, which stipulates that spectators must be kept 100 meters away from the fire line. Rajan remarked, “If the condition that the audience must be kept 100 meters away from the barricades of the fire line is enforced, it would make it difficult for spectators to enjoy the fireworks.” He suggested modifying the distance to 50-70 meters as a more feasible alternative.
Speaking to reporters in Thrissur, Rajan accused the Centre of attempting to undermine the Thrissur Pooram festival and stated that the matter would be escalated to relevant officials in the Central government, including those representing Thrissur. He further mentioned that the state would initiate official communication with the Centre, led by the chief minister, to address the issue.
The dispute has stirred concerns among Pooram enthusiasts, with many hoping for a resolution that would allow the festival’s fireworks displays to proceed as per tradition.
