New Delhi- Two key civil society organizations—Meitei group Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) and Kuki group Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU)—have accused each other of undermining state and central authority amid President’s Rule in Manipur. The Centre has ordered the removal of road blockades across the state by March 8, warning of strict action against non-compliance.
COCOMI condemned CoTU’s demand for a “separate administration” as an unconstitutional challenge to India’s governance. The Kuki group, in response, accused COCOMI of representing “armed militias” and promoting anti-Kuki sentiment. CoTU has vowed to resist the Centre’s orders until its demands, including restricted road access and a Union Territory status, are met.
Meanwhile, Thadou leader T Michael Lamjathang Haokip has criticized CoTU’s stance, calling it a strategy to prolong violence in the state. As tensions escalate, the Supreme Court is set to hear a petition related to former CM N Biren Singh’s alleged role in the conflict.
Over 250 people have died and 50,000 displaced since the ethnic clashes began in May 2023. With President’s Rule in effect, the state’s political future remains uncertain.
