Imphal- The Federation of Civil Society (FOCS), a major Meitei civil society organisation, has affirmed that it will proceed with its scheduled peace march from Imphal to Senapati district on March 8, even as some Kuki organisations are opposed to it. The march, which has been supported by a number of like-minded associations, is to usher in peace, unity, and reconciliation into the state.
FOCS President Th. Manihar, speaking to the media in a press conference, appreciated the recent announcement by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, assuring free movement on all Manipur roads from March 8. Manihar explained that the main intention of the march was to send a message of peace, not to incite any group or community. “This is not a confrontation march, but a reconciliation message,” he said. “We believe this initiative will serve to reduce tensions and emphasize the Centre’s dedication to free movement within the state.”
In spite of opposition from three Kuki groups, who have raised concerns against the march, Manihar asked them to drop their stand and join the peace initiative. “Instead of resisting, we ask them to give this noble cause their support. It’s a chance for all communities to sit together, reconcile, and make better understanding possible,” he stated.
The peace march will start at 8 a.m. on March 8 at Kangla Gate in Imphal, a cultural symbol of Meitei people, and travel through Kangpokpi district, which is predominantly inhabited by Kuki people, before ending in Senapati district. FOCS also declared upcoming plans for peace marches to other locations, including one to the border town of Moreh, reflecting their sustaining interest in peacebuilding in the region.
Though the Kuki organizations have raised objections, tribal associations like the Committee on Tribal Unity (COTU) and the Indigenous Tribal Leaders’ Forum (ITLF) have shown solidarity with the movement. Manihar urged them to join behind the march, considering it to be an essential move towards crossing the divide and fostering trust among communities.
The peace march comes as tensions between the Meitei and Kuki people are rising due to ethnic and political strife. But FOCS is optimistic that this march would be an occasion for reconciliation and dialogue that could heal Manipur’s increasingly deepening cleavages and work towards a peaceful future for everyone who inhabits it.
