Dehradun, 28th Jan. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 38th National Games in a grand ceremony in Dehradun on Tuesday. Addressing the gathering, the Prime Minister described the event as a celebration of India’s rich sporting talent and diversity, remarking that Uttarakhand, on its 25th anniversary, was radiating youthful energy as athletes from across the nation showcased their skills.

Highlighting the theme of “Green Games,” PM Modi noted that environment-friendly practices were a cornerstone of this year’s games. Trophies and medals made of e-waste and the initiative to plant a tree for every medal winner were key features of this sustainable approach. The event also included traditional games, adding a touch of cultural richness to the competition.

The Prime Minister underlined the government’s commitment to fostering a sports ecosystem in the country. He highlighted initiatives like the Khelo India Games, Khelo India Para Games, and the establishment of modern sports infrastructure, including India’s first sports university in Manipur. The sports budget has more than tripled in the past decade, reflecting the nation’s focus on nurturing athletes.

PM Modi praised Indian athletes for their recent successes on global platforms, including the Olympics and Paralympics, and highlighted India’s kho-kho team’s World Cup victory, as well as achievements in chess by Gukesh D. and Koneru Humpy. He reiterated India’s ambition to host the 2036 Olympics, emphasizing that such events boost infrastructure, tourism, and national pride.

The Prime Minister also connected the spirit of sports with national unity under the theme of “Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat,” encouraging athletes to celebrate India’s diversity through its languages, cuisines, and traditions. He urged citizens to adopt fitness and nutrition as a way of life, advocating for healthier living under the Fit India Movement.

The inauguration saw the presence of Uttarakhand Governor Lt. Gen. (Retd.) Gurmit Singh, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, and Union Ministers Ajay Tamta and Raksha Khadse among other dignitaries.

The National Games, hosted by Uttarakhand for the first time, are expected to boost the local economy and promote winter tourism in the state, aligning with PM Modi’s vision for Uttarakhand’s holistic development. The games, the Prime Minister remarked, are not just about competition but about fostering unity, excellence, and sustainability.
