Port Louis: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Mauritian counterpart, Naveen Ramgoolam, on Tuesday, jointly planted a Bael (Aegle Marmelos) tree at the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden in Mauritius. The symbolic tree-planting was conducted under PM Modi’s ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ initiative, which encourages afforestation while paying tribute to mothers.
PM Modi’s Green Initiative Goes Global
The ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign was launched by Prime Minister Modi on World Environment Day in June 2024, with the goal of promoting environmental responsibility and sustainability. The initiative has been widely embraced, leading to the planting of over 1 billion trees in India and expanding its footprint worldwide.
Beyond India, the initiative has made a significant impact globally, with over 27,500 trees planted in 136 countries. PM Modi himself has participated in tree plantation drives in two countries, including Guyana and now Mauritius.
During the tree-planting event, PM Modi highlighted the importance of collective action in addressing climate change. He also reiterated India’s commitment to increasing forest cover and promoting sustainability through global cooperation.
PM Modi’s Mauritius Visit Strengthens Cultural & Diplomatic Ties
Earlier in the day, PM Modi took to X (formerly Twitter) to share glimpses of his visit, appreciating the rich Bhojpuri cultural heritage thriving in Mauritius.

The Official Spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs, Randhir Jaiswal, also briefed the media on PM Modi’s engagements during the visit. He emphasized the warm welcome Modi received from PM Ramgoolam at the airport, which was followed by an official ceremonial reception.
Later in the day, PM Modi is set to address the Indian diaspora in Mauritius and hold crucial diplomatic discussions with Mauritius President Anerood Jugnauth to further strengthen bilateral ties.
