New Delhi, 20th Nov. In a key address at the G20 Summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted India’s efforts toward sustainable development and energy transition. Speaking at the session on Sustainable Development and Energy Transition, PM Modi emphasized the group’s commitment made during the New Delhi Summit to triple renewable energy capacity and double energy efficiency by 2030.
He welcomed Brazil’s decision to further these sustainability goals. Reflecting on India’s achievements, Modi shared that over the past decade, India had provided housing to 40 million families, clean drinking water to 120 million households in five years, and clean cooking fuel to 100 million families. Additionally, 115 million families were provided with toilets.
India, he noted, was the first G20 nation to fulfill its Paris climate commitments, setting a target of producing 500 GW of renewable energy by 2030, with 200 GW already achieved. The Prime Minister also spoke about India’s global initiatives, such as the International Solar Alliance, the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure, and Mission LiFE, emphasizing their role in building a sustainable future.
PM Modi called on the G20 nations to prioritize the needs of the Global South, particularly Small Island Developing States, and expressed support for the Global Development Compact announced by India during the third Voice of the Global South Summit.
