Bengaluru, Karnataka, 14th Nov : Karnataka Rural Development Minister Priyank Kharge on Wednesday criticized Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for alleged “vote bank politics” following remarks made by Adityanath against Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge. Kharge urged Adityanath to focus on campaigning based on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s achievements rather than promoting divisive narratives.
“Try winning the elections on PM Narendra Modi’s ‘achievements’ instead of sowing seeds of hatred in society for political gains,” Priyank Kharge posted on X (formerly Twitter).
Adityanath’s remarks at a rally in Maharashtra’s Achalpur referenced an incident involving Mallikarjun Kharge’s family, who, according to Adityanath, were victims of violence by the Razakars, the paramilitary wing of Hyderabad’s Nizam. Adityanath’s comment followed criticism from Kharge about the UP CM’s “batenge to katenge” remark in the lead-up to assembly elections in Maharashtra and Jharkhand.
Responding to Adityanath’s statements, Priyank Kharge clarified that his father’s family had suffered violence by the Razakars, not the entire Muslim community, and that Kharge Sr. never used the tragedy for political purposes. “In 1948, the Razakars burned down Mallikarjun Kharge’s house, taking the lives of his mother and sister. He never exploited this for political gain, nor did he let hatred define him,” he said, emphasizing that Kharge Sr. rose from these challenges to serve as a nine-time MLA.
Further, Priyank Kharge accused Adityanath’s ideology of failing to see his father as an equal due to caste-based discrimination. “Your ideology fails to see Kharge ji as an equal,” Kharge said, questioning Adityanath’s attitude towards inclusivity and equal treatment across communities.
The verbal exchange reflects the heightened rhetoric as both parties ramp up efforts ahead of state elections in Maharashtra and Jharkhand, with each side attempting to consolidate support by addressing issues of historical injustices and political ideology.
