New Delhi, 28th Nov. Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra was sworn in as a Member of Parliament (MP) on Thursday following her decisive victory in Kerala’s Wayanad during the recent bypolls. The 52-year-old Congress leader, who is joining her mother Sonia and brother Rahul in Parliament, took her oath in Hindi while holding a copy of the Constitution. This marks a rare moment in Indian politics where three members of the same family will serve together in Parliament.
Ravindra Chavan, who won the Nanded bypoll in Maharashtra, also took his oath in Marathi, following the demise of his father, Vasantrao Chavan.
Priyanka Gandhi’s victory, with a massive margin of over 4.1 lakh votes, surpassed the tally of her brother Rahul Gandhi in Wayanad. This victory marks her first election as an MP, five years after entering active politics in 2019 and being appointed Congress General Secretary.
Her entry into Parliament comes at a challenging time for the Congress party, which has faced setbacks in recent elections in Haryana and Maharashtra. It remains to be seen whether her presence in Parliament can help rejuvenate the party’s fortunes.
Often compared to her grandmother, former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, due to their similar looks and speaking style, Priyanka has been a prominent campaigner for the Congress. Her election victory is seen as a pivotal moment for the party, which will be hoping for her leadership to help restore its electoral momentum.
In her campaign, Priyanka Gandhi defeated Sathyan Mokeri of the CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) in the Wayanad bypoll, further consolidating the Congress’s position in Kerala. On Wednesday, Congress leaders from Wayanad handed over her election certificate and extended their congratulations to the newly elected MP.
