PTI Slams Bilawal Bhutto Over Extradition Remarks, Labels Him ‘Politically Immature’

Published:

Former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party has strongly criticized PPP leader Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari for his recent remarks suggesting that Pakistan could consider extraditing individuals like Hafiz Saeed or Masood Azhar to India under a broader peace dialogue. The PTI called the comments “reckless” and labeled Bilawal as “politically immature,” accusing him of undermining Pakistan’s national security stance.

Controversial Proposal

Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, during an international interview earlier this week, said that Pakistan could consider extraditing certain individuals as part of a confidence-building measure with India, provided there is a comprehensive dialogue that includes terrorism as a central issue. The remarks have triggered a political firestorm at home, particularly among right-wing factions and hardline voices.

PTI’s Reaction

In a strongly worded statement, PTI spokesperson Sheikh Waqas Akram said Bilawal’s comments reveal a “naïve understanding” of national security and diplomacy.

“Bilawal Bhutto is too immature to speak on matters of such strategic importance. His comments serve only to appease international powers while betraying national interests,” said Akram.

The party also accused Bilawal of adopting India’s narrative on terrorism and warned that such positions could damage Pakistan’s credibility in the region.

Security Concerns and Sovereignty

PTI further claimed that Bhutto’s willingness to even discuss extradition of individuals who are considered controversial within Pakistan could be viewed as compromising national sovereignty. The party said this approach weakens the country’s stance in bilateral negotiations and appears as if the civilian government is “ready to surrender under international pressure.”

Hardline leaders have also weighed in, stating that extradition would be a betrayal of Pakistan’s ideological and legal framework. Some right-wing commentators argued that such ideas endanger domestic unity and embolden foreign critics.

Broader Implications

Observers suggest Bilawal’s remarks may reflect a divide between the civilian political class and Pakistan’s powerful military establishment, which traditionally controls security and foreign policy. While some within Pakistan’s liberal political circles may favor new confidence-building steps with India, the military and conservative politicians remain opposed to any perceived softening.

Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari’s extradition comments have widened political fault lines within Pakistan, exposing deeper disagreements over the country’s foreign policy orientation. As PTI intensifies its criticism, labeling him politically immature, the episode underscores the challenges civilian leaders face in shaping a new diplomatic narrative in a country where security decisions remain closely guarded by entrenched institutions.
