New Delhi, 28th Nov. The proceedings of the Rajya Sabha were washed out for the third day in a row on Thursday, as opposition MPs continued their protests over the Adani issue and the violence in Manipur and Sambhal. The House was adjourned within minutes of reconvening at 12 noon, following an earlier adjournment just after 11 am.
Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar made repeated appeals for decorum and urged the members to allow the Question Hour to proceed. However, these calls were ignored as opposition MPs persisted with their protests, raising slogans and demanding discussions on the issues at hand.
In his address, Dhankhar expressed disappointment over the disruption, noting that Wednesday marked a historic milestone—the beginning of the final quarter-century before India’s Constitution turns 100. He lamented that the opportunity to engage in productive dialogue was missed. “This was a moment for our House of Elders to send a powerful message of hope to 1.4 billion Indians,” he said, adding that the House had failed to meet the expectations of the people.
The chairman emphasized the importance of meaningful debate, saying, “Parliamentary disruption is not a remedy but a malady that weakens the very foundation of our democracy.” He urged the members to return to thoughtful discussion, but the protests continued, leading to the adjournment of the House for the day. The Rajya Sabha is scheduled to reconvene on Friday at 11 am.
Earlier, when the session began, proceedings were delayed for nearly 50 minutes as opposition MPs raised objections over the rejection of their notices for adjournment motions. These notices sought discussions on allegations against the Adani Group, as well as the violence in Manipur and Sambhal. Despite opposition demands, Dhankhar rejected all the notices, further escalating tensions in the House.
