Sambhal, 5th Dec. The Sambhal administration announced plans to display posters of individuals allegedly involved in the November 24 violence over a local mosque survey. District Magistrate Rajender Pensiya confirmed that the posters, featuring over 400 identified individuals, are being finalized and will exclude those already arrested.
Speaking to the press, Pensiya stated, “Posters of those involved in Sambhal violence will likely be displayed today. We have arrested 32 individuals so far and identified more than 400 others.” A peace committee meeting is scheduled for 3 PM to discuss the situation.
The Uttar Pradesh government had earlier directed that those involved in the violence would be made to pay for damages to public property, with their photographs displayed on public walls. Sambhal police have already released images of suspects, including nine identified individuals, and sought public assistance in identifying others who were masked.
An official spokesperson hinted at the possibility of rewards for information leading to arrests.
The violence, which erupted during a second survey near the Shahi Jama Masjid on November 24, left four people dead and many injured. The incident followed tensions stemming from a November 19 court-ordered survey of a Mughal-era mosque, amid claims that a Harihar temple once stood on the site.
This isn’t the first instance of such measures in Uttar Pradesh. In 2020, similar posters were put up during the anti-CAA protests but were later removed following a court directive.
Authorities hope the move will deter future unrest while expediting the identification of those involved in last month’s violence.
