Imphal– In a significant escalation of counter-insurgency operations (CIOs), security forces have seized a substantial cache of firearms and ammunition across various districts of Manipur following the conclusion of the amnesty scheme at 4 PM on Thursday. The intensified efforts have resulted in the recovery of 36 firearms, 129 rounds of ammunition, seven explosives, and 21 miscellaneous items from several vulnerable areas.
The combined operations, between central forces and state police, were launched against several districts such as Imphal West, Imphal East, Churachandpur, Kangpokpi, Thoubal, Kakching, Bishnupur, Jiribam, and Tamenglong. The operation is part of a sustained effort to step up security in the area that has been facing insurgency-related problems.
During a significant operation in Khengjang village, Kangpokpi District, security forces seized two Self-Loading Rifles (SLRs), two Pump Action Guns, 59 rounds of 12-bore ammunition, a used case of 5.56 x 45 mm caliber, a bulletproof helmet, and a wireless handset. The operation reveals the variety of weapons that continue to be available in the region, highlighting the difficulties for law enforcement agencies.
More searches resulted in more seizures at Tatbung village under Kaimai Police Station in Tamenglong district, where four Single Barrel Breach Loading (SBBL) guns were seized. In another raid at Moidangpok under Patsoi Police Station, Imphal West, security personnel found a.32 caliber pistol, five barrel guns, two Tear Smoke Munitions, and three High-Explosive (HE) grenades.
Also, in Sawombung-Paorabi village of Lamlai Police Station, Imphal East, an SLR rifle with a magazine, two 9mm pistols with magazines, 19 rounds of Amogh carbine ammunition, two hand grenades, and a 303 rifle bayonet were recovered.
During another operation in Langmeithek Yerum Ching under Nongpok Sekmai Police Station, Thoubal, the government took into custody an INSAS rifle along with a magazine, an SMG carbine, two 12-bore single-barrelled guns, a revolver, a flare gun, two hand grenades, binoculars, two wireless sets along with chargers, four bulletproof jackets, and two bulletproof helmets.
The conclusion of the amnesty program has encouraged security forces to act decisively against possession of illegal arms, in an effort to ensure peace and stability in the region. The operation is still in progress, with the authorities encouraging local communities to cooperate to sustain law and order.
