Sambhal, 30th Nov. A 15-member delegation from the Samajwadi Party (SP) will visit Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh, on Saturday to investigate the violence that erupted after a survey in the Shahi Jama Masjid complex. SP state president Shyam Lal Pal confirmed the visit, directed by party chief Akhilesh Yadav, to gather information and submit a report.
Tensions in Sambhal have been high since a court-ordered survey of the Jama Masjid on November 19, where a petitioner alleged the mosque was built over a former Harihar temple. Violence broke out on November 24 during protests against the survey, resulting in stone-pelting and arson. Four people were killed, and several others, including police personnel, sustained injuries. Authorities have denied allegations of police firing during the clashes.
The SP delegation includes senior leaders such as Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Assembly Mata Prasad Pandey, Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Council Lal Bihari Yadav, MPs Ziaur Rahman Barq, Harendra Malik, Ruchi Veera, Iqra Hasan, Neeraj Maurya, and MLAs Kamal Akhtar, Ravidas Mehrotra, Nawab Iqbal Mahmood, and Pinky Singh Yadav. Notably, Ziaur Rahman Barq is facing allegations of engaging in “provocative acts” during the violence.
Congress state president Ajay Rai announced that a Congress delegation would visit Sambhal on December 2.
The Samajwadi Party had earlier postponed its visit after assurances from the Director General of Police regarding a fair investigation. Prohibitory orders have been imposed in Sambhal, restricting the entry of outsiders until Saturday.
