Thane, 2nd Nov. Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has vowed to thoroughly investigate the killing of NCP leader Baba Siddique, who was shot dead on October 12 outside his son’s office in Mumbai. In an exclusive interview with ANI, Shinde described the incident as “unfortunate” and emphasized the government’s commitment to maintaining law and order. He stated that many suspects have already been arrested and assured the public that those involved in the crime would face strict action.
“It is the government’s responsibility to maintain the law and order… The incident was very unfortunate. Many of the accused in the incident have been arrested. The government and Home Department will reach the roots of it. Those who are involved will not be spared. Strict action will be taken,” he stated.
Baba Siddique, a former minister and prominent NCP leader, was shot dead on October 12 by three assailants outside the office of his son, MLA Zeeshan Siddique, in Mumbai’s Nirmal Nagar. He suffered gunshot wounds to the chest and was rushed to Lilavati Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
The killing has been claimed by a gang led by jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, with the Mumbai Police having made 15 arrests in connection with the case thus far.
During the interview, Chief Minister Shinde also addressed the issue of NCP leader Nawab Malik’s candidacy from Mankhurd, asserting that the ruling coalition would not campaign for Malik. “Our decision is clear and our candidate is also contesting. Our stand is clear… We will see on November 4. Ajit Pawar is our alliance partner and we will work in alliance,” he added.
Shinde highlighted the appreciation his government has received in a short span, portraying it as a government for the common man. “I consider myself a CM—common man… I go directly to the people, listen and talk to them. I believe that the farmers have the first right to our government’s treasury… We have allocated ₹15,000 crores in two years to compensate for the losses.”
Responding to opposition criticism, Shinde defended his active engagement with the public and his approach to governance. “I am proud that within a short time, people have started saying that this is their government… My Ladli Yojana has become a superhit, is that wrong? People’s money should be spent to save people’s lives.”
The Chief Minister emphasized his hands-on approach, stating that whenever he receives requests from the Chief Minister Relief Fund, he promptly signs them, underscoring the government’s dedication to saving lives. “One lakh lives have been saved; this is a matter of great fortune for me,” he concluded.
