New Delhi, 21st Oct. Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Sagarika Ghose held the BJP-led Union and Haryana governments accountable for rising pollution levels in the national capital while accusing them of unfairly blaming the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) administration in Delhi. Speaking to PTI on Monday, Ghose emphasized the recurring issue of pollution, stating, “It is the same story every year; pollution in Delhi increases in October, and the Union government blames it on the AAP government in Delhi.”
Ghose questioned the absence of a comprehensive national plan to combat pollution, urging the Union government to collaborate with all states. “Why is the Union government not working on a national plan after consulting all states so that pollution can be controlled? Where is this national plan on pollution?” she asked, highlighting the need for a coordinated approach to tackle the crisis.
The TMC Rajya Sabha member criticized the BJP-led government for prioritizing electoral politics over environmental concerns. “The BJP-led government is focused on fighting elections and targeting states ruled by non-NDA parties,” she remarked.
Furthermore, Ghose accused the Haryana government of not cooperating with Delhi’s efforts to combat pollution. She stated, “The suffering of people because of the air and water pollution is not a concern for the BJP and the Central government.” She reiterated that the Haryana and central governments are responsible for the escalating pollution levels affecting the capital.
As winter approaches, Delhi faces worsening air quality, remaining in the “poor” category, despite a decrease in stubble burning incidents this year compared to previous years. Recent research reported 2,733 farm fires between September 15 and October 19, with Punjab recording the highest number at 1,393, followed by Haryana (642), Uttar Pradesh (687), and Delhi (11).
Delhi Chief Minister Atishi has also pointed fingers at “parali” (paddy stubble) burning, diesel buses, and brick kilns in BJP-ruled Haryana for the city’s deteriorating air quality. Additionally, she attributed the froth appearing on the Yamuna River in Delhi to untreated industrial wastewater being released by Haryana, further underscoring the need for accountability and cooperation in addressing pollution issues in the region.
