Lucknow, 30th Jan. A tragic stampede at the Maha Kumbh in Uttar Pradesh claimed 30 lives in the early hours of Wednesday as devotees rushed for a holy dip on Mauni Amavasya. According to police, the incident occurred between 1 am and 2 am on Akhara Marg when a massive crowd gathered ahead of time, breaking barricades and trampling those waiting for the auspicious Brahma Muhurta dip.
Deputy Inspector General Vaibhav Krishna stated that the rush led to a collapse of the barriers, triggering the stampede. Several families have blamed poor crowd management, alleging that authorities failed to open the barriers in time, which could have prevented the disaster.
“We saw our mother and sister-in-law dying in front of our eyes,” said Jagvanti, a grieving relative from Jaunpur.
Following the incident, 90 people were taken to hospitals, with 36 undergoing treatment at a local medical college. Among the 30 victims, 25 have been identified, while the remaining include individuals from Karnataka, Assam, and Gujarat.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has announced a three-member judicial commission, including Justice Harsh Kumar, former DG VK Gupta, and retired IAS officer VK Singh, to investigate the tragedy. Additionally, an ex gratia of ₹25 lakh has been announced for the families of the deceased.
