Mumbai – Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar has called for a national debate on the shift from democracy to ‘Emocracy,’ where emotion-driven policies threaten good governance. Speaking at the inaugural ‘Murli Deora Memorial Dialogues’ in Mumbai, he cautioned against excessive electoral spending, warning that populism undermines economic stability and governance.
Highlighting the dangers of appeasement politics, Shri Dhankhar stressed that unrestrained electoral promises diminish the state’s ability to invest in infrastructure. He urged political parties to reach a consensus on fiscal prudence, stating, “Election is important in democracy but not the end of it.”
The Vice President also raised concerns about illegal migration and mass conversions, citing their impact on demographics, employment, and social cohesion. He asserted that sovereignty must not be diluted and reaffirmed India’s constitutional commitment to justice, equality, and fraternity.
Honoring the late Murli Deora, Shri Dhankhar praised his legacy as a unifying leader and recalled his pioneering role in securing a ban on smoking in public places. He described leadership as a “pilgrimage of service” rather than a position of power.
The event was attended by Maharashtra Governor C.P. Radhakrishnan, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, Rajya Sabha MP Milind Deora, and other dignitaries.
